Directories, primary education

A principal feature of this web-based exercise is the coupling of inquiry-based techniques with a virtual reality field trip using panoramic photography and eruption simulations to enable a unique level of interactivity between students and the electronic media. The module follows the NSF-approved approach of Focus, Explore, Reflect and Apply, which is based on effective pedagogical research findings. The main objective is to engage students as explorers and observers, enabling them to learn about volcanic processes and hazards, collect virtual field information, and then formulate hypotheses about the effects of explosive volcanic eruptions and the deposits that they produce. It is suitable for Introductory Earth Science or Natural Hazard courses.

Other Scientific Information, Publications, Image Databases and Photo/Slide Sets Related to Volcanoes

  • Colima Database : The website is http://www.geociencias.unam.mx/colima/index.php . This site include information on the eruptive history of the Colima Volcanic Complex, complete bibliographic reference of published works, and data from ongoing research from people participating in this initiative. A hazard map (compiled based on previous published works) is also available and it can be visualized with Google Earth. In addition pictures and movies of the volcano edifice, its ongoing activity and the volcanic deposits are available. The mapserver section is still under construction, and the purpose is to have direct access to thematic maps (deposit distributions) and point data (i.e. stratigraphic section, sedimentology, rainfall data, geochemical composition, ages….etc). It is worth mentioning that all data presented in this site came only from published works, and that we are trying to keep all information up-to-date. In particular, anyone that has data, picture or publications not already included in our database, please feel free to send the information and we will include it in the online database.
  • The website  www.EcuadorVolcanoFieldGuide.com   has been developed to provide teachers, volcanologists, and tourists with resources to plan volcano-oriented excursions throughout the Ecuadorian Sierra (e.g., field camps, spring break geology trips, and weekend outings). It has not been constructed by a guide service, though it promotes a select few that we have used in the past. It has been drafted by individuals who have experience teaching and working throughout the Sierra in cooperation with the Instituto Geofísico, the Ecuadorian geophysical institute responsible for monitoring volcanic unrest in the region.

  • A Global Assessment of Active Volcanism, Volcanic Hazards, and Volcanic Inputs to the Atmosphere from the Earth Observing System. Providing information about the project activities of the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) Interdisciplinary Science (IDS) Investigation Volcanology Team. EOS is a series of polar-orbiting remote-sensing satellites planned for launch starting in 1998 and spanning a period of at least 15 years. EOS is a major component of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth.
  • Fascination Volcano!
  • Contains a large selection of volcano photos, and scientific background information about the volcano of Santorini, Greece. Offers tours to volcanoes as well.
  • Geology of Iceland
  • Granular Volcano Group
The ultimate site for understanding granular flows, granular processes, fluid dynamic, supercomputer
modeling, and grain-size analysis in Volcanology, Geophysics, and Physics.
  • Hawaii Drilling Project
  • HSDP has drilled a 1056 m hole in Hilo, Hawaii, retrieving rocks from the Hawaiian volcanoes Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Now on-line is a complete lithologic core log with photographs and thin-sections. This information can be used by investigators to find areas of interest for possible sampling.
  • Images of Volcanoes with Maurice and Katia Krafft (Images de Volcans)
  • Created by the Conservatoire Régional de l'Image with about 3000 slides (a selection out of 300000) and several video clips made by Maurice and Katia Krafft. This web-site is in French but will also be available in English by the end of 2005.
