The theme for the IUGG2011 conference at large is “ Earth on the Edge: Science for a Sustainable Planet”. IUGG2011 will be the largest multi-disciplinary geophysical meeting to be held in Australia, and in excess of 3,000 delegates are expected to attend. In addition to the IAVCEI volcanology and geochemistry specific program outlined above, the scientific program will address many of the environmental, sustainability and hazard issues facing the Earth, including climate change, extreme weather events, melting glaciers and ice-caps, rising sea-levels, water in arid countries, earthquake hazards and tsunamis, and volcanic hazards, processes and natural resources. It should thus be a fantastically stimulating conference.

The conference website is now open at http://www.iugg2011.com , with information about the conference, the scientific program of symposia, workshops and fieldtrips, and listings of the symposia convenors and Keynote Speakers. On-line registration for the conference opened on the website on 16th August, as well as for fieldtrips, social touring, and accommodation.

The call for on-line abstract submission has also now opened, with the deadline for abstract submission being 17th January, 2011 for the Conference Grants applicants and 1st February for all other Delegates (see above)

ABSTRACTS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY THE AUTHOR WHO WILL PRESENT THE PAPER

All abstracts, whether for an oral or poster presentation, must be submitted by the author who will present the paper, even if the author is not the first author. The presenting author is responsible for submitting the abstract, paying the abstract submission fee, and must register and pay the registration fee, for the paper to be accepted. Papers cannot be presented by a third party, who is not a member of the author team.

All presenters are limited to two oral presentations, except for the eight invited Union Plenary Lecturers, who may present two oral presentations in addition to their Union lectures.

For all abstract submission and registration details, and the scientific program outline, go to: www.iugg2011.com

IUGG consists of eight scientific associations, including IAVCEI, but also including the disciplines of seismology (IASPEI), geodesy (IAG), atmospheric science (IAMAS), oceanographic science (IAPSO), cryospheric science (IACS), hydrology (IAHS), and geomagnetism (IAGA). So in addition to the IAVCEI General Assembly, each of the other associations will also organise their own comprehensive program of symposia. However, a highlight of the IUGG General Assembly is the opportunity to organise inter-disciplinary inter-association symposia on topical themes of global significance. The theme for IUGG2011 will be:

“Earth on the Edge: Science for a Sustainable Planet”

The conference will be marked by a comprehensive volcanological and geochemical scientific program on state of the art themes, outstanding plenary and keynote speakers, a program of inter-disciplinary, inter-association symposia addressing major scientific issues of global and regional significance and concern, and a program of PRE- AND POST-CONFERENCE FIELDTRIPS in the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua-New Guinea, Vanuatu, New Zealand and Australia, as well as workshops.

An Early Bird registration fee will be available, as well as a grants scheme to which post-graduate students, young scientists and scientists in need can apply for financial assistance to help in attending the conference.

The conference will be held entirely in the new Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, which was completed in June 2009, and is the most modern convention centre in the world. The convention centre is located on the banks of the scenic Yarra River in the central business district of Melbourne, and is within walking distance, or a short tram, bus or underground ride from accommodation ranging from back-packers and hotels of all standards.

Melbourne is a multi-cultural and friendly city, offering a huge selection of restaurants and cafes with almost every cuisine available. Melbourne has numerous beautiful parks, and is located within 2 kms of the beaches and beach suburbs of Port Phillip Bay. In addition, the area around Melbourne is ideal for day or two day touring or sight-seeing including spectacular coastal scenery and beaches, vineyards, snow skiing, native forests and national parks, a young intra-plate volcanic province, and zoos and nature reserves with Australia's exotic fauna and flora.

Australia and New Zealand are also fantastic destinations for holidays and tourism, offering exotic touring opportunities. The indigenous Aboriginal culture of Australia and the Maori culture of New Zealand are unique in the world.

The Organizing Committee looks forward to sharing the rich scientific program they are planning for the IAVCEI2011 General Assembly in Melbourne with you, as well as the unique and exotic recreational opportunities Australia and New Zealand offer to participants and their families.

Six reasons to come to IUGG2011:

1. A comprehensive and large IAVCEI volcanology, petrology and geochemistry scientific program of symposia, keynote speakers, fieldtrips and workshops

2. Opportunity to participate in an exciting, multi-disciplinary conference on cutting edge science.

3. A large program dedicated to interactive poster presentations, exhibitions and sponsors displays that will be valuable and stimulating.

4. The new Melbourne Convention Centre, completed in late 2009, is one of the most modern convention centres in the world. The whole conference will be held in one building purpose built for large conferences and conventions, close to transport and accommodation, and built on the scenic banks of the Yarra River in the CBD of Melbourne.

5. Stay in one of the most live-able cities in the world. Melbourne is a beautiful city with fine buildings and spacious parks. Immigrants from many, many countries have given Melbourne a multi-cultural, cosmopolitan outlook, and the city has developed as the cultural, fashion, shopping, sporting and culinary centre of Australia.

6. Take that holiday in Australia and New Zealand that you’ve always wanted to take. Visit the rugged coastal scenery, vineyards and ski fields of southern Australia and New Zealand, or the warm beaches, the Great Barrier Coral Reef system and arid inland of the “Red Centre” of northern, tropical Australia, at the most perfect time climatically to visit the tropical north.
