1st International Workshop on Volcano Geology

Madeira, Portugal

July 7-11, 2014

Volcanology has made great advances in the last three decades becoming a modern interdisciplinary science that has learned how to quantify volcanic processes, their associated hazards and resources, as well as the impact of volcanic activity on the society and environment.

In this scientific and technological revolution undertaken by modern volcanology it is remarkable the explosion of physical and mathematical modelling as a necessary tool to undertake a comprehensive approach on volcanic processes. This important advance has, however, relegated in some cases geological studies to a second term, although geology is still the main source of data on which to base volcano studies. To strength the importance of geology in modern volcanology we propose to organise the 1st International Workshop on Volcano Geology in order to provide a forum for discussion among researchers on the state of the art of geological studies in volcanology as the basis for understanding the behaviour of volcanoes and their future activity, and to encourage multidisciplinary research in the geological fields involved in volcanological studies.
